Instructional (Re)Design with David Hinson and Shawndra Bowers

This week on the Intentional Teaching podcast, I’m excited to share a story of course transformation, a story that leverages the strengths of online learning in service of an onsite course and that involves a thriving partnership between a faculty member and an instructional designer.

David Hinson is the faculty member in this story. David is the R. Hugh Daniel professor of architecture at Auburn University, and he teaches a course in professional practice, a course that covers such things as running a business, marketing and communication, and professional ethics. When he realized that his lecture course needed an overhaul, he reached out to Auburn’s center for teaching and learning, the Biggio Center, for assistance.

At the Biggio Center, David met the instructional designer in this story, Shawndra Bowers. Shawndra is the associate director of learning experience design at the Biggio Center, where she manages a team of 40 people who support online education at Auburn. Shawndra has her hand in a number of interesting teaching projects at Auburn, including this architecture professional practice course redesign.

In the podcast interview with David and Shawndra, we talk about what motivated David to redesign his course, the big changes David and Shawndra made to the course, how the two have leveraged student feedback to continue to improve the course over time, and what it’s like to work with an online education unit to redesign an onsite course.

You can listen to my conversation with Shawndra and David here, or search for "Intentional Teaching" in your favorite podcast player.

Five Ways to Reimagine Assignments in the Age of AI

Last week I led a webinar on teaching and learning with generative AI as part of the "Higher Learnings" series from Top Hat. This week, the good folks at Top Hat wrote up a recap of the webinar on their blog and shared the webinar recording on their YouTube channel.

In the webinar, I talked about the need to change--or keep--learning objectives in our courses in light of generative AI, as well as some intentional ways to use AI to enhance teaching and learning. I also walked through my assignment makeover process using an infographics assignment from my stats course as an example.

If you missed last week's webinar, you can read about it or watch it at the links above thanks to Top Hat. What's not captured there is the incredibly lively text chat from the webinar! Thanks to all those who attended and contributed to the conversation.

Thanks for reading!

Universal Design for Learning at Scale with Tom Tobin Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for improving learning for all learners based on the science of how humans learn. It involves providing learners with multiple means of engagement, representation, action, and expression. We’ve mentioned the framework on the show from time to time, and I thought it was time to dig in a little deeper. Naturally, I thought of inviting Thomas J. Tobin on the podcast. Tom helped found the...

AI-Powered Learning Assistants with Sravanti Kantheti It’s been 16 months since ChatGPT was released and all of higher education had to start figuring out what to do with generative artificial intelligence. One thread of that very lively conversation has focused on the potential for AI to serve as a kind of learning assistant for students. We know that having students go to the free version of ChatGPT and ask it questions about course content can lead to some... inaccurate answers. But what...
